We’re excited to share that our Co-Founder & CEO Evan Shelley recently joined Lee Klaskow, freight transportation and logistics analyst at Bloomberg Intelligence, for an in-depth conversation on the Talking Transports podcast.
The Truck Parking Crisis
During the interview, Evan highlighted the severity of the truck parking shortage in America. With only one parking space available for every 11 trucks on the road, drivers spend an average of 56 minutes daily searching for safe parking. This inefficiency costs drivers thousands of dollars annually and creates billions in lost productivity across the industry.
Rapid Growth and Expansion
Since launching in 2022, Truck Parking Club has experienced remarkable growth:
- Nearly 2,000 locations across 48 states
- 8-10 new properties added daily
- Over 40,000 parking spaces available on the platform
Evan shared our ambitious goal of reaching 10,000+ locations within the next 20 months, emphasizing that scale is crucial for providing drivers with parking options within 10 minutes of their location at any given time.
The Marketplace Model
Rather than building new parking facilities—which can cost $100,000-$200,000 per space—Truck Parking Club operates as a two-sided marketplace. We connect truckers needing parking with property owners who have underutilized space, including:
- Trucking companies with excess yard space
- Storage facilities
- Tow companies
- CDL schools
- Repair shops
- Industrial property owners
This approach has enabled us to create tens of thousands of parking spaces without any new construction, while providing property owners with passive income from their unused land.
Strategic Partnerships
Evan announced several exciting partnerships that are accelerating our growth:
- Prime Storage: The third-largest self-storage company in the US, with plans to reach 100 locations
- Logistics Plus: A major 3PL with warehouses across the country
- Various trucking companies: Who use our platform for both driver parking and trailer placement
Looking at the Data
One fascinating aspect Evan discussed was the real-time data we’re collecting on parking patterns across the country. We can watch parking demand move across the US like a heat map, providing valuable insights into freight movement and driver behavior patterns.
What’s Next
Evan also revealed plans for our new headquarters near Chattanooga, Tennessee, which will feature:
- Multiple acres for truck parking
- Driver amenities and lounge areas
- A space to meet with drivers and gather feedback
- A model for what great truck parking facilities can look like
Listen to the Full Episode
The complete conversation covers much more, including:
- The economics of truck parking
- How we maintain quality across diverse locations
- Our 24/7 customer service staffed by former truckers
