    Congressman Steve Womack (R-AR), chairman of the Transportation Appropriations Subcommittee, was instrumental in securing this funding. The American Trucking Associations has been advocating for this investment, with ATA President Chris Spear calling the parking shortage “an immense burden on truck drivers” that “creates significant roadway hazards.”

    As Spear put it: “Truckers are essential to Americans’ way of life, and the least we can do to show our support is to ensure they have a safe place to park and sleep when they take their federally mandated rest break or finish their shift.”

    The appropriations package includes several other provisions relevant to trucking:

    • A directive for USDOT to develop a strategy to respond to cargo theft
    • A study on predatory towing practices
    • Strengthened oversight of the Training Provider Registry

    The Senate is expected to vote on the bill before January 30. If approved, it heads to the President’s desk for signature.

    Early Monday morning, a collision on I-95 in Maryland claimed a life and left others seriously injured.

    According to the Maryland State Police, a refuse collection truck traveling southbound struck the rear of a tractor trailer parked on the right shoulder near Route 100 in Howard County. The driver of the refuse truck was pronounced dead at the scene. Two passengers were airlifted to a trauma center, and the tractor trailer driver was transported to a local hospital.

    The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
